Working Title Films, founded by producers Tim Bevan and Sarah Radclyffe in 1983, is a British Film Production Company, whose headquarters lie in London. They are well known for producing feature films such as, 'Love Actually', starring Hugh Grant and 'Les Misérables', directed by Tom Hooper.
Their aim is to make European movies for a worldwide audience and want to instil them with European ideas and influences in order to reach a wider audience.
On 15th November 1985, they launched their first ever production, 'My Beautiful Laundrette', which sparked the many successes that the company were yet to achieve. Radclyffe departed in 1992 to set up her own production company and so in her place came Eric Fellner, who - as an independent film producer - joined Bevan and are now ch-chairs of the company. Together, these men achieved above and beyond and have led the company into becoming the most successful British Film Production Company of our day. In 1999, Universal Studios - an American film studio - decided to buy Working Title Films and are now a parent company. Universal Studios are owned by NBC Universal who are owned, as a whole, by Comcast.
Working Title Films further have offices located in L.A and Ireland and are well known for collaborations with Richard Curtis and The Coan Brothers, just to name a few.
As well as producing feature films, the company is also involved with TV productions and have been active since the 90s. Since joining NBC Universal in 2010, the company have produced for both British and American television. It was back in 2000 that Natascha Wharton produced a major production that also released and the company's first ever theatrical piece - 'Billy Elliot' - in the West End. It was originally produced by Greg Brenman and Jon Finn as a British dance drama film, which came to a total worldwide Domestic Gross of $109,280,263.
Internationally, Billy Elliot has won over 80 theatre awards and has been seen by 10 million people. As a whole, they have produced over 100 films that have grossed over $6 billion worldwide and have won 11 Academy Awards for such productions as 'Les Miserables' and 'The Theory of Everything'. In addition, 38 BAFTA Awards were given to them on their work along with 10 Oscars. Bevan and Fellner have individually attained numerous awards, one honour including the 'Commanders of the Order of the British Empire'.
